The 5th Pillar of Family Life: Technology

For the past 15 years I’ve been talking about the four pillars of family life -- Personhood, partnership, parenting and prosperity -- and now I’m realizing that there’s a fifth pillar -- Technology.

It’s the aspect of modern life that many of us interact with more than ourselves or our people.

Adults use it for work
Kids use it for school
We all use it for connection and entertainment
and so much more...

It's woven itself into our lives whether we like it or not.

Certainly, there’s unbelievable value that comes from the use of technology. The ability to Facetime with extended family, learn something new on Youtube, keep up with people and causes and the news of the world through these devices that fit into our pockets is remarkable.

And yet…

It's important to recognize that 24 hour access to the world out there can take away from the world in here.

There’s no right or wrong way to be in relationship with technology, there’s just consciously choosing and that is an INSIDE JOB.

What are the boundaries?

Where are the lines?

The truth is, we are in relationship with these devices.

We are in relationship with these apps

We are being tempted by new things, regularly, that give us dopamine hits at the touch of a button.

Bringing self-awareness and clarity to how you're interacting is valuable to you. Guiding your people so that they can be more self-aware and clear in how they're interacting is valuable to all of you.

You can’t prepare your people for the technological world they are going to live in.

However, you can teach them how to be SELF-AWARE and CLEAR on how to interact with what shows up.

And that starts with you.

If you find this useful, stick around. I’ll be sharing lots more on this topic in the coming weeks.
